Smell is one of our most important senses and different aromas can trigger various emotions in our daily lives.  That’s why scent comes into play when potential homebuyers attend an open house. How a home smells could be an important consideration for prospects viewing a property.

The power of aroma can create a positive vibe for homebuyers and help them visualize living in your house. Today, people are more sensitive to artificial scents so what better way to tap into their sense of smell than with the comforting ‘warm home’ aroma of a baked apple pie.

While there’s nothing more inviting than the fresh smell of apples in the air to welcome and attract buyers to take a closer look, there are also other fragrances that can make your home feel like an oasis to viewers.

When choosing  a scent, keep it simple and select just one long-lasting, natural fragrance that is appropriate for the aesthetic of your home and highlights its positive attributes.

What’s the best scent for your home? Throughout the year there are different aromas that could appeal to homebuyers’ emotions. Aside from apple pie, other examples for autumn and winter include comforting spicy and warm scents such as:

  • Cinnamon
  • Ginger
  • Vanilla
  • Cedar wood

If your home will be on the market in the spring or summer, think about fresh and clean scents such as:

  • Lemons
  • Oranges
  • Cucumbers
  • Apples

Before your next open house, infuse the entire space with the same pleasant aroma. However, remember that less fragrance is really much, much more. Keep the scent subtle because you want potential buyers to concentrate on the property and its features, and not get overwhelmed by the way it smells.
